Summer Camp Secrets

In the next 9 days there is an executive order that can be signed to end the J1 visa program, which would mean no more international staff at summer camps, and the end to Summer Work Travel programs across America. To me, this is absolutely devastating. The vast majority of staff at my camp are internationals and I know it’s the same for many, many camps across the States. This order will cripple camps and harm small businesses, providing economic hardships for many.

Being a camp counselor is so much more that just a ‘fun’ experience in the sunshine and then getting to travel a bit. Ask anyone who’s done it. It challenges you to be a better person. It forces you out of your comfort zone to try new things, meet new people and widen your knowledge about people from around the world. You are  responsible for parent’s most prized possessions… their children. You provide them with care and attention, guiding them to make good choices, teaching them new skills and giving them the opportunity to learn about different people, countries and cultures. You give back as much as you get.

Working at summer camp changed me. It’s the reason I am who I am today. It is the reason I knew I wanted to work with kids forever. It is the reason I am confident, responsible, independent, a leader. So the thought that this could be the end of a program that gave me, and many others, so much, just hurts my heart.
